Promoting sustainable fashion brands & practices from Canada's Green Capital city, Vancouver,BC
Eco Fashion Week (EFW) is a non-profit organization dedicated to stimulating growth and development of sustainable practices in the fashion/clothing industry. This said industry generates 300 billion dollars every year, but unfortunately, it is one of the most damaging to our planet. In fact, some have even started referring to it as "waste couture".
EFW will focus solely on environmentally friendly designers and practices. There is a growing shift in the fashion industry to include the wellbeing of the environment into its practices and Vancouver has become widely known as a haven for independent designers who are committed to using recycled, organically grown, and locally produced fashion. A direct effect of EFW will be to stimulate the growth of eco-conscious fashion and accelerate the industry’s renaissance into the environmental age.
In addition to the focus on fashion, EFW will combine runway shows with presentations, talks and mini-conferences on the topic of sustainability, environmental awareness and best practise methods in eco-conscious clothing design and production. EFW will seek out both local and international clothing designers that incorporate environmentally-friendly aspects into their process. Sponsors, presenters and speakers will be individuals, organizations, and businesses that have contributed to sustainability and environmental efforts.

David Dixon - World MasterCard Fashion Week – The Tent at David Pecault Square – March 15, 2012
Canadian born David Dixon, enjoys tremendous media acclaim, standing out among his Canadian contemporaries as one of the leaders in fashion design.
In 1995, after an apprenticeship with the world-famous Canadian designer Alfred Sung, Dixon established his own label. He started out at the Toronto Fashion Incubator, a highly respected training ground for up-and-coming new designers, and began manufacturing and wholesaling his own line in 1996. Dixon left the Incubator to launch his own Toronto-based design and production studio, but he remains affiliated with the TFI and sits on its Board as the President.
Today, David Dixon’s designs are sold across Canada and in the United States, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Germany, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Dixon possesses a modernist openness towards emerging design while rejecting the notion of radical change from one fashion trend to another. His innovative designs have won him a following among the elite communities of film and fashion, including: Meg Ryan, Noot Seear, Jeanne Beker, Wendy Crewson, Daria Werbowy, Ashley MacIsaac, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Paul Gross, Catherine O’Hara, Kristin Booth, Ivana Santilli and Katie Holmes.
More recently, Dixon has expanded his successful signature collection, and has partnered with several National and International brands to further the David Dixon label. Collaborations with the highly successful Town Shoes Chain have resulted in a nationally recognized David Dixon shoe line, while partnerships with The Shopping Channel and Mattel International have brought Dixon into other new and exciting arenas.
In 2008, Dixon secured the exclusive licensing rights for Barbie by David Dixon, a ready to wear collection for real women, to be sold across Canada exclusively through The Bay Department Stores. This collaboration with the International Brand Mattel and The Bay is the first of its kind in Canada. Of more recent in 2011, “David Dixon, LITTLE BLACK DRESS,” has been officially launched across Canada through The Bay.
Over the past two years Dixon, known for his attention to detail, integrity of the design process and over all high quality control expectations throughout all divisions of his brand, has expanded his companies marketing and sales strategies and now designs and sells several collections exclusively for the highly popular The Shopping Channel. This has reinforced Dixon’s belief that fashion is not just for the few, but also rather for everyone.
The ever-growing presence of the David Dixon brand will continue to develop in the years to come. Currently the David Dixon Signature Collection can be found at The Bay, Holt Renfrew, Simons, and specialty boutiques across Canada.

I really am a reactionary when it comes to fashion. Most "new" mens' shoes don't appeal to me.
My Marine pilot neighbor (the one who gave me his fatigue boots when he was issued a new pair) and I were talking about this the other day. He said, "try these since we now know you and I are the same shoe size."
They are comfortable. I still think they look like my dad's bedroom slippers but I see feet everywhere shod like this so I guess I'll give in. :)

Fashion's Night Out - Charlotte Sept 9 2010

Creative Loafing has a new blog coming. Mine!
Wayfaring Tech Nomad will be about three things: Travel, tech and, occasionally, the intersection of the two.
In April 2012, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to go on a trip to Doha, Qatar and bring everyone along with me. Now, I'm off to Explore the world some more! The experience will be the same: a look at the world through a Charlottean's eyes. While I'm not traveling, and sometimes when I am, I'll be keeping everyone up to date on the cool happenings with the tech scene, especially as it pertains to our beautiful city.
Speaking of, expect neat things, which is what I'm shooting in the above video, and other little vignettes from all kinds of cool places all over the world.
So, welcome to the adventure!
Follow me on Twitter: @dbirdy.

As Creative Director of the Joe Fresh® brand for Loblaw Companies Limited, Joe is committed to offering women, men and children stylish and versatile looks for every day that are both well- designed and well-priced. Joe personally oversees the design and development of an extensive clothing range, from chic footwear to the latest in outdoor fashions. Joe is intrinsically involved in every step of the Joe Fresh® creative process from product design to marketing, finding the right model for an advertising campaign to selecting a store location and design. Shortly thereafter he founded Club Monaco and later launched Caban, both sold to Ralph Lauren in 1999.
With his current company, Joseph Mimran & Associates, he continues to keep his finger on the pulse, providing elegant design, inventive product development and branding expertise for the apparel, home and entertainment divisions of Loblaw Companies Limited including PC® Home, Everyday EssentialsTM, Jogi, J+/-, Teragear and Cats+Dawgs.
