"Pearls and the Sea" Vintage Necklace
1920 fashion
I have had this necklace design in mind for quite some time. The merging of vintage beads, doilies, shell beads, retro and vintage beads and 1920's applique' on the pearl look main bead forms a piece of remembrance for the seaside. Doilies around the large retro pearl are flexible and will remind you of all the other seasiders who enjoyed the sea many years ago. Size of main imitation pearl bead: 3cm in diameter. Length of necklace open: 47.5cm.

Asphyxia’s work has been called “bad-ass femininity,” “dark and daring,” “pin-up dominatrix chic,” and “bordello in hell.” The most most recent collection, BLOOM, was presented at |FAT| 2012. Hannah Yakobi (Fajo Magazine) tweeted live “Punk, goth, power … dress being cut live onstage!” Style Empire called the collection “edgy and modern attitude… designs offset by the classic lines and materials that are very reminiscent of a 1920′s flapper,” and said “while everybody left the show alive it’s safe to say that Alexandra De Francesco’s collection entitled Bloom took our breath away…”

+ + ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

An edgy innovator, Alexandra De Francesco immerses herself in inspiration and is always pioneering new heights in dark and one of a kind wearable art by employing unconventional materials with exceptional and dynamic results. Reverence for classical lines and shapes is reinterpreted through the exploration of a virtual Pandora’s box of references; including nature, feminism, philosophy, sustainability, history, the occult, body modification, ritual customs, memento mori, mourning and decay. She enjoys breathing new life into a variety of organic and salvaged materials such as disintegrating lace and beadwork, ancient silks, recycled fur and leathers alongside hand-spun water soluble threads, hand-dyed and silkscreened fabrics. Look for incredible textures, distressed fabrics, intricate and delicate beadwork and tiny remembrances worn close to the heart, brought together with new meaning in pieces that strengthen and empower.

Doll may one day be rerooted.

Outfit is incomplete. Slacks are worn. Blouse is in much better shape. I bought the shirt thinking I'd use it for Ricky, and then the slacks and wooden croquet mallet showed up in a case lot. Missing are the sleeveless top, jacket, royal blue Japan flats, 2 wire wickets, wooden stake, wooden ball.

This is my Mom's next younger sister. My Mom was the oldest of 6 siblings: 3 girls, 3 boys of which she and the two youngest, boys, are still living. My Mom's 85th birthday is coming up in a few days. I have lots of 1920's era old purses and not so many family photos of the era to go with them. So I will add a few here, just the purses. But since my Mom is only interested in people photography, I will eventually add some of those kind of shots as well!

Mannequin parade at Finney Isles & Co., Brisbane, 1929
1920 fashion
Image by State Library of Queensland, Australia
Creator: Unidentified

Location: Brisbane, Queensland

Description: Models at a fashion parade at Finney Isles & Co., wearing a number of different styles of 1920s evening dresses which are loose-fitting around the bodice, and have low waist lines and uneven hemlines. The models are wearing rows of glass beads or pearls, made popular in the 1920s by French designer Gabrielle Chanel. Hairstyles include the 'bob' and 'shingled' styles which were popular in the late 1920s. The shingled hairstyle was 'cut short at the back and longer at each side, and artificially permed and set into waves' (information taken from: E. Owen, Fashion in photographs 1920-1940, 1993). The parade was held on 12 September 1929, in aid of the Creche and Kindergarten Association at Finney's.

Along with the fashion show I composed a visual pathfinder about real life fashion in the 20th century. The display includes freebies from a variety of decades, information on designers, trendsetters, inworld fashion magazines and so much more. Each picture represents a decade. When you click on the picture there is a selection of websites that include videos on period hair and makeup. Composition by Ka Castaignede- volunteer librarian.
