This is a Fashion Illustration drawn at some time in the 1950's displaying Gentleman's Fashion in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The image is part of a collection capturing the changing face of Fashion in Newcastle upon Tyne, from the 1940’s to the 1980’s. This is expressed through photographs of shop fronts, advertising photography and product photography. More photographs can be viewed here www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/sets/72157633468735885/

This collection of photographs can be found in the Turners Collection at Tyne & Wear Archives. Turners Photography Ltd was a commercial photographic company based at 7-15 Pink Lane, Newcastle. The collection is an extensive one, covering all aspects of commercial photography, including many jobs for large advertising firms of the time such as Tully-Crabbe Ltd.

These images have been compiled in contribution to Newcastle Fashion week 2013.

Notice how the drawn models deliberately avoid looking the photographed models directly in the face. It's as if the drawings are saying, No, you can't ever look like me, and yes, it really is a pity.

Description: Young woman models a strapless floral dress for an advertisement for T. C. Beirne's. She is photographed on the wharf at North Quay, Brisbane, around 1951.

The bodice of the dress is shirred, with a full, gathered skirt. The model has her left hand on a strap which appears to be detachable. In her right hand she holds a bolero jacket? in matching fabric. She is wearing high-heeled, two-tone shoes.

DCU Fashion Show 2010 'The Edge of Industry'
This edgy, student run extravaganza showcases an original and theatrical take on fashion. It explores fashion through an industrial and gothic view. The show, run by DCU Style Society, features the 'Young Designer' competition, where Irish student fashion designers battle it out on stage with their original costumes to claim the coveted title of DCU Young Designer of the Year.

This photograph is from the Turners collection

Date: 02/05/1958

Turners was established in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early 1900s. It was originally a chemists shop but in 1938 become a photographic dealer. Turners went on to become a prominent photographic and video production company in the North East of England. They had 3 shops in Newcastle city centre, in Pink Lane, Blackett Street and Eldon Square. Turners' photographic business closed in the 1990s.
